SEX & POWER

2025

This moving image work brings together archival footage from the Great Chinese Famine (1959–1961) and the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), alongside materials drawn from works by Carolee Schneemann, Robina Rose, and the photographic practice of Nobuyoshi Araki. Through collage, high-frequency image transitions, and a continuous musical structure, the film reassembles these sources to revisit a period of political upheaval and extreme social rupture.

The work draws a resonance between the ecstatic intensity of revolutionary mass movements and the power dynamics of sexual climax. In both, pleasure and domination are closely entangled. As the film moves from heightened intensity toward exhaustion, it turns to the aftermath of ruin—loneliness, desolation, and psychic residue—where trauma begins to surface.
